I've been listening to THE NATIONAL since their first albums, but like INTERPOOL, this band just gets more mature and better with age. Their new release HIGH VIOLENT is in stores now, and it combines their alt rock/folk sound with wacked out lyrics that would be dangerously dark, if not so tongue-in-check clever. Take for example their dreamscape toe-tapper "Conversation 16," whose refrain is none other than I was afraid, I'd eat your brains, 'cause I'm evil.
Dark, yet in a silly hipster way, and not a death metal, have-you-checked-the-children way.
